I thought long and hard about where to put my store. For many good reasons I settled on Hel-Mel, the intersection of Heliotrope and Melrose, and one of the sweet spots of East Hollywood.
Let me count the ways...
Great Building
Classic 1920’s row storefronts. A big chunk of it used to be Pak-Am Stationary, filling all your Pakistani-American Stationary needs. Rehabbed by the current owner and quickly filling up with creative and energetic tenants, including:
- Eyetailor - http://eyetailor.com/
- Dharma Punx - http://www.dharmapunx.com
- Early California Antiques - http://www.earlycaliforniaantiques.com/
- Synchronicity Gallery - http://www.syncspacela.com
- Dutton Architects - http://www.duttonarchitects.com/
Lovely neighbors
It’s the most avant-garde Gelato in town, if you don’t know: Scoops (we want them to offer a Jenette Bras special: two extra-large scoops) is tucked in a little storefront next to City College Cafe. I’d recommend the Guiness Chocolate (that’s Guiness, as in beer).
Speaking of beer, have you ever considered that beer is vegan? Good Luck Café has an epicurean selection to wash down your “pork” sandwich.
For the carnivorous, Pizza Paul’s is a local institution, dishing out lasagna, meatball subs, and pepperoni pies for more than 40 years.
Hel-Mel is a central hub in the Los Angeles cycling universe, thanks to Orange 20 and The Bicycle Kitchen.
How about a show? Sacred Fools Theater Company is right around the corner, http://sacredfools.org/, and the sharpest comics in LA try out new material at Fake, directly across the street from Jenette Bras. http://fakedotcom.com/
Last but not least: The Historic Jensen’s Melrose Theatre (now the Ukrainian Culture Center). http://cinematreasures.org/theater/2143/
Right Off The 101
The Melrose exit puts you about two blocks west of us, the Vermont Exit is about three blocks SouthEast.
